GenX Women Are Sick Of Your Shit

What happens when you put nearly 1/2 a MILLION GenX women in a Facebook group?

It all began with something my (Megan) then 22-year-old daughter said: “I need a better work/life balance”.

I found this hilarious because, like most women in my generation, that’s just not something we understand. In many cases, we mostly raised ourselves. If you’re like me, you started working a part-time job at the mall when you were 15 (or younger). Really, working is kind of our thing. And sure, we bitched about it as much as any generation. But we did it and I know I never had the thought that it was optional.

And look, I’m in no way saying that we were in the right here. Working ourselves to death isn’t something we should be proud of. It’s not healthy. But what my daughter said was hilarious because I never for a single moment even thought what she was saying out loud.

So, I started a Facebook group.

Fast-forward a little more than a year, and the group is now home to more people than the whole beautiful land of Iceland. Thousands of women between 45 and 58 log on every day to discuss topics that range from menopause and changing careers, to dating, kids, grandkids, and what bra is the least miserable. Oh. and chin hair. We talk about chin hair. A lot.

It’s a massive, beautiful community.

We don’t agree on everything. There are very strong opinions on topics you might be shocked by. This is the internet, after all. But, this sisterhood is authentic, and the conversations are real and sometimes very raw. We’re all coming to grips with the fact that a lot of what our generation took as hard and true facts is changing as the millennials and GenZ generations come into their own. Many of us are dealing with topics that old people deal with. And that’s not us. We’re still the fiercely independent rebels we have always been, but damn it feels good to know we’re not alone.

Words from some of the members:

“Thank you for all you do!!!!!!!! This page is amazing.”

“I absolutely love this group! Thank you so much for creating it! I laugh at times when I need it the most. I also share with my 17-year-old son, who has absolutely no idea how we grew up!😂”

“Whatever you do, please keep the great spirit of camaraderie and acceptance that the group has. Thank you!!”

“Love this group, it is one of those rare things that just happens and it's wonderful”

“Love this group. It really helps being with women going through the same things in life

“So happy to me part of this page, so many of my long time friends have passed and I had no one to share all these topics with ❤️”
